As the days lengthen and we are out on the water more and more, a wee reminder of a few guidelines may be useful..
Dress Appropriately: Wear warm, waterproof clothing and suitable footwear. It’s often cooler on the water, and your footwear will get wet. Dressing in layers is recommended, and an extra warm hat can be very beneficial.
Protect Your Hands: Rowing or sailing gloves can help prevent blisters.
Wear Your Lifejacket: Always wear your lifejacket properly adjusted and be familiar with its operation.
Communicate Your Experience: If you are new or relatively new, please inform other members before the row begins.
Follow the Cox’s Instructions: The cox is in charge of the skiff and the safety of all crew members. Always listen to their guidance.
Express Concerns: Let the cox know if you have any concerns or limitations before or during the row.
Stay Seated: Do not stand or move about the skiff unless directed by the cox.
Adjust Footrests: Set the footrests to your height and comfort. Sit so your feet are straight out with your knees only slightly bent.
*Proper Rowing Technique: Bend from the hips and push with your legs while keeping your back straight.
Post-Row Lifejacket Care: After each row, check your lifejacket, untangle the straps, and move them to their shortest setting. It’s the crew members’ responsibility to ensure life jackets are properly stowed before the next row.
Enjoy Yourself: Most importantly, have fun and enjoy your time on the water!
