It was a foggy foggy start to Maritime Day at Kyle ..and it stayed that way… but it didn’t stop the fun. Crews from Golspie, Strathpeffer, Plockton and Gairloch brought their boats to take part in the skiff race which went ahead despite very limited visibility. Quite an eerie sight to watch them head off and disappear into the gloaming, but all safely returned, with Golspie securing a solid first place.
A valiant Saucy Mary crew also pitted their wits and muscles against the Fire Service, RNLI and others in the challenge to make a raft and row it round a set course – a brilliant team effort as they battled with knots and planks and tried to make it move in the right direction without capsizing – all successfully achieved.
And in the meantime, we were down at the pontoon offering Taster Rows to encourage new folk to give rowing a try, and up top, the rest of the gang were at the stall – packed with activities to lighten the wallets of passers-by. It all made for a brilliant day and we are thrilled that overall we raised £648 for the club. With other funding support that means we are now well placed to commission a new set of oars and the search has already begun for someone to make them!
Thank you to everyone who made Maritime Day happen and particularly to the RNLI for asking us to be part of their day.
