Being a Cox

The cox is the person responsible the safety of the boat and the crew. You can find detailed information about the responsibilities of being a cox in our Cox Guide which you can download here.

To be a competent cox you will need to have the skills below. As a club we provide annual training.

Cox Competency

Practical

  1. Manoeuvre skiff to pick up a floating buoy on a line
  2. Drop and safely manoeuvre away from the buoy
  3. Complete turns on both hands, round buoys
  4. Steer a straight course.
  5. Complete 360 degree turn
  6. Complete emergency stop
  7. Launch and recover skiff

Written / Oral

  1. Identify means of accessing weather, tidal and safety information
  2. List procedure for safety brief prior to launch
  3. List “No Go” circumstances
  4. List safety kit required for normal rowing
  5. List kit required for SCRA Racing
  6. List correct launching and recovery procedures.
  7. Describe how to deploy the anchor. Description of anchor equipment.
  8. Describe Role of the Cox and Responsibilities
  9. Identify areas locally where it is safe/not safe to go and why.
  10. What are the club approved cox commands for moving astern and short turning to
    port.
  11. Name ten attributes, tasks and responsibilities of a cox
  12. Write out the name of your skiff in the phonetic alphabet.
